Travelling Around Scotland
By Road
Before the 18th century, travelling around Scotland, particularly in
the Highlands, was mainly by foot. While the
Drove Roads provided some well travelled routes
into the central parts of Scotland, these could not actually be described as
roads as such. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries the road network was improved and
expanded with the creation of the so-called Military
and later Parliamentary Roads. Some
of these older routes still exist and add to the network of footpaths that take the travellers into many places
that few vehicles can even get near!
