The People of Scotland
Britons of Strathclyde
The Britons established the Kingdom of Strathclyde with
its capital at Dumbarton around the 5th century. This area was made up of much
of modern Strathclyde, Galloway
and the English Lake District in Cumbria. At one point the
kingdom also included Lothian.
In the mid 7th
century, Angles from Northumbria reached the Solway, separating Cumbria from the
rest of the kingdom. In 756, Oengus McFergus, the king of the Picts, joined the
Angles in a siege of Dumbarton.
In 870 the king of
Strathclyde was killed by Constantine I and the following year the capital was
sacked following a Norse invasion.
