Pre 1975
Until 1975, the country was split in to 33 council areas:
- Aberdeenshire
- Angus (Forfarshire until 1928)
- Argyll
- Ayrshire
- Banffshire
- Berwickshire
- Bute, County of
- Caithness
- Clackmannanshire
- Dumfriesshire
- Dunbartonshire
- East Lothian (Haddingtonshire until 1921)
- Fife
- Inverness-shire
- Kincardineshire
- Kinross-shire
- Kirkcudbrightshire
- Lanarkshire
- Midlothian (County of Edinburgh until 1921)
- Moray, County of (Elgin until 1890)
- Nairnshire
- Orkney
- Peeblesshire
- Perthshire
- Renfrewshire
- Ross and Cromarty (separate until 1890)
- Roxburghshire
- Selkirkshire
- Shetland (Zetland)
- Stirlingshire
- Sutherland
- West Lothian (Linlithgowshire until 1921)
- Wigtownshire
In
1975, the council areas were combined
into nine mainland regions and three island authorities;
in 1996 the country was reorganised again, this time in
to 32 council areas.
