Local Government
1975 - 1996
From 1975 to 1996 Scotland was split into nine mainland regions, each of
which was further split into a number of districts:
- Borders (Berwickshire; Ettrick and Lauderdale; Roxburgh; Tweeddale)
- Central (Clackmannan; Falkirk; Stirling)
- Dumfries and Galloway (Annandale and Eskdale; Nithsdale; Stewartry;
Wigtown)
- Fife (Dunfermline; Kirkcaldy; North-East Fife)
- Grampian (Aberdeen; Banff and Buchan; Gordon; Kincardine and Deeside;
Moray)
- Highland (Badenoch and Strathspey; Caithness; Inverness; Lochaber; Nairn;
Ross and Cromarty; Skye and Lochalsh; Sutherland)
- Lothian (East Lothian; Edinburgh; Midlothian; West Lothian)
- Strathclyde (Argyll; Bearsden and Milngavie; Clydebank; Clydesdale;
Cumbernauld and Kilsyth;
Cumnock and Doon Valley; Cunninghame; Dumbarton; East Kilbride; Eastwood;
Glasgow; Hamilton; Inverclyde; Kilmarnock and Loudoun; Kyle and Carrick;
Monklands; Motherwell; Renfrew; Strathkelvin)
- Tayside (Angus; Dundee; Perth and Kinross)
In addition there were three island council areas:
- Orkney
- Shetland
- Western Isles
Before 1975, the country was split
in to 33 council areas; in 1996 the country was
reorganised, this time in to 32 council areas.
