Charles I (1625 - 1649)

1625 - Charles I decides the Scottish Kirk should become Anglican and that bishops would oversee the church and answer to him. Supplicants believed the church should not answer to a king.

1637 - Riot in St. Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh supposedly started by Jennie Geddes - she is said to have thrown a stool at the pulpit in St. Giles in protest of the reading from the New Book of Common Prayer.

1638 - General Assembly of the Church of Scotland sent Anglicans home, which resulted in the first Bishop's War. The General Assembly later rejected the English Church, resulting in the second Bishop's War.

1638 - National Covenant signed

1639 - 1st Bishops' Wars

1639 - Pacification of Berwick

1639 - Battle of Megray Hill

1640 - 2nd Bishops' Wars

1640 - Battle of Newburn Ford

1641 - Treaty of Rippon

1642 - Solemn League & Covenant, adopted by Scottish and English Parliaments to protect the Church, opposed Roman Catholicism and the king. Supplicants now known as Covenanters.

1644 - Battle of Tibbermore, near Perth

1644 - Battle of Aberdeen

1644 - Battle of Fyvie

1645 - Battle of Inverlochy

1645 - Battle of Alford

1645 - Battle of Kilsyth

1645 - Battle of Philiphaugh

1648 - Battle of Auldearn

1648 - Whiggamore Raid

1649 - Execution of Charles I

Charles II (1649 - 1685)

1650 - Monck's Regiment of Foot formed - now known as the Coldstream Guards

1650 - Battle of Invercharron

1650 - Battle of Dunbar

1650 - Murder of Cardinal Beaton

1651 - Battle of Worcester - Charles II defeated by Oliver Cromwell. Charles returns to France until the Restoration in 1660.

1651-60 - Scotland has 30 MPs in the parliament of the Protectorate. In 1657 the House of Peers is set up of which Scotland has 4 representatives.

1651 - Perth captured by Cromwell - citadel built

1651 - Battle of Pitreavie

1651 - Battle of Dundee

1651 - Battle of Inverkeithing

1652 - Ayr and Inverness citadels built

1652 - Scots' Dike

1654 - Inverlochy citadel built

1654 - Battle of Strone Nevis (Dalspindal?)

1656 - Leith citadel built

1658 - General Monck assembled troops in Coldstream and marched to London - the lead up to the Restoration in 1660.

1660 - Restoration of Charles II

1666 - Battle of Rullion Green, also known as the Pentland Rising - army of Covenanters advanced to Edinburgh from the southwest. They were defeated by Royalist Troops led by General Tam Dalyell.

1666 - Execution of the Covenanters

1679-81 - Exclusion Crisis

1679 - The Killing Time

1679 - Battle of Drumclog - victory to Covenanters

1679 - Battle of Bothwell Bridge

1680 - Battle of Airds Moss
