Mary, Queen of Scots (1542 - 1567)

1543 Mary I (Queen of Scots)

Treaty of Haddington - agreement between Scots and French to send Mary to France for safety.

1543-50 Rough Wooing - the Anglo-Scottish wars in response to the Treaty of Greenwich which stipulated the marriage of Mary to Prince Edward, later Edward VI, with a view to a union between England & Scotland

1544 - Blar-na-Leine, the Battle of the Shirts, near Laggan (Loch Lochy)

1545 - Battle of Ancrum Moor

1545 - The Lordship of the Isles finally merged with the Scottish Crown. The title is currently held by the heir to the British throne.

1547 - Battle of Pinkie, near Musselburgh

1557 - Supplicants opposed to the anglicisation of Scottish Presbyterianism sign a covenant to this effect. A further covenant was signed in 1581 and reinforced in 1590 and 1596.

1560 - Treaty of Edinburgh - also known as Treaty of Leith

1561 - Mary, Queen of Scots returns to Scotland - arrives in Leith

1562 - Battle of Corrichie

1563 - Scottish Parliament passed the first statute against witchcraft.

1565 - Campaign, now known as the Chaseabout Raid, by Mary, Queen of Scots, against a rebellion led by the Earl of Moray, who opposed her marriage to Darnley.

1566 - Murder of Rizzio
