430 - 1058
A Divided Nation
From the time the Romans left (c.430) until Scotland was
united under one ruler (1034) the country was inhabited by four different races
- the Britons of Strathclyde, Scots of Dalriada,
Angles of Bernicia and
Picts.
603 - Battle of Degsastan.
685 - Battle of Dunichen (Nechtansmere).
841 - Reign of Kenneth mac Alpin.
858 - Death of Kenneth mac Alpin at Forteviot.
926 - Athelstan first king of Anglo-Saxons in Britain.
c.937 - Briton kingdoms of Cornwall and Strathclyde under
Anglo-Saxon control.
943 - Constantine abdicates to become a monk at St. Andrews
and is replaced by Malcolm.
1010 - Battle of Mortlach.
In 1018 at the Battle of Carham, Malcolm II along with
Owen, King of Strathclyde, defeated the Northumbrians and brought Lothian into
the kingdom of the Scots.
1034 - Death of Malcolm II, Glamis.
1040 - Duncan I killed by Macbeth at Pitgavney, near Elgin.
1054 - Battle of Dunsinane.
1057 - Battle of Lumphanan - Macbeth killed by Malcolm Canmore. Macbeth was succeeded by
Lulach.
1058 - Lulach killed by Malcolm at Errier, Strathbogie.
1058 - Kingdom of Strathclyde merged with the kingdom of
the Scots.
