80 - c.430 AD
Roman Occupation
80AD - Southern Scotland, known as Caledonia by the Romans, was invaded by Gnaeus Julius Agricola, governor of the Roman
province of Britain.83AD - Agricola beats the Caledonians in the battle of Mons Graupius. The
location of this battle, believed to be somewhere in Aberdeenshire, is
subject to much debate.
123 AD - Emperor Hadrian visits Britain and orders a wall to be built to deter
northern tribes from invading. This becomes known as Hadrian's Wall and
stretched from the Solway Firth in the west to the River Tyne in the east.138 AD - Emperor Antonius Pius reoccupies lowland Scotland.
c.142 - 145AD - The Antonine Wall is built, stretching from the Firth of Forth to the River Clyde.397 AD - Towards the end of the Roman occupation, Christianity is
introduced to the country when Ninian founded his mission at Whithorn.
c.430AD - Romans finally leave Britain. | |
