Early Scottish History7,000 BC - Mesolithic Hunters and Fishermen. 6,000 BC - Use of flint tools. 4,000 BC - Earliest settlements of Neolithic Farmers. 2,500 BC - Migration of Beaker People from Europe. 2,000 BC - Bronze Age - appears to have spread from Ireland 1400 - 900 BC - Improved tools and weapons. 900 BC - First Celtic Migration from Europe in the west with two branches - Goidelic, settling in Ireland and western Scotland; Brythonic. Romans referred to these people as Picti, the Picts. 900 - 400 BC - Production of elaborate shields. 500 BC - Iron Age - iron replacing bronze, possibly introduced during the Celtic migration. Earliest fortifications built, as a defence from invasion. 400 BC - Crannogs built for defence. 100 BC - Brochs built, also for defence. Other buildings, including duns, souterrains and wheelhouses, built for defence as well as permanent dwellings. |
