Standing Stones

Standing Stone Gallery

Some early settlers were referred to as Megalithic, Large Stone, as they erected massive stone monuments. These tend to be found only in the British Isles with the most famous being Stonehenge. Lussa Wood, Jura, consists of three stone rings and is regarded as the earliest stone structures in Scotland. Other examples in Scotland can be found in the Outer Hebrides, such as Calanais, Lewis, and Orkney Islands, Stones of Steness.

They tended to follow the same pattern - a large ditch surrounded by an outer bank of earth encircling a ring of large standing stones. Some of the stones used to weigh up to three tonnes.

There are also a number of stones that stand alone. These tend to be decorated with various symbols.
