Preface

IN preparing the following sketches I have been much helped by the work of Professor Hume Brown, whose Early Travellers in Scotland and Scotland Before 1700 contain the older narratives in an admirably edited and conveniently accessible form. The article on "Captain Burt" first appeared in Chambers’ Journal, and I have to thank the editor of that magazine for kind permission to reprint it.
